Navigating convoys on darkened roads during wartime posed challenges with dimmed headlights and the absence of street lights. In Northern France, the risk of cleared land mines scattered along roadsides added to the danger, compelling vehicles to stay on cleared paths. To mark roads at night, small battery-powered lights were used. These lamps, crafted from stamped metal, featured deep hoods to cast light downward, minimizing the risk of enemy observation. They could be mounted on posts with shaped bases for securing with screws or nails, or worn on belts using rear slides. Access to the lamp’s interior for battery replacement was facilitated by undoing the two screws on either side of the lid.
