~ 1903 Cased Campaign Surgical Instruments Set ~
A wonderful cased set of surgical instruments dated for 1903.
The set is a portable campaign set from India bearing broad arrow marks.
The set is by ‘Eyres & Co.’, and hails from Bombay (now Mumbai) in India.
Little information has been found about the company aside from the fact that the head of the firm was a Mr Edmund Eyres Esq.
The cased set features three open metal trays, stacked one on top of another, each laid out with a myriad of stainless steel surgical instruments. The trays are handily labelled Top, Middle and Bottom.
The instruments (approximately 38 plus sundries) are variously stamped ‘Eyres’, Eyres Bombay’ and Eyres & Co. Bombay’.
To the inside of the case lid is a b&w photograph of each tray labelled, as a reference for the user to easily identify where in the set a particular instrument is to be found.
The case itself is of wood with brass fittings.
To the top of the lid is a small brass plaque which reads ‘E. Eyres & Co., 1903, No. 53’ and features the government/military broad arrow with uppercase ‘I’ below for India.
~ Dimensions ~
The case measures 45cm (17 ½ inches) by 17cm (6 ¾ inches) by 7.5cm (3 inches).
The cased set weighs 5.78 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The set is not fully complete. There are a few missing instruments such as a few knives, a pair of pincers and some urethral staves but in most cases these instruments come in multiples and there are still other examples still within the kit.
The instruments are all in good order with just a few age spots to some.
The case is in good order with general wear but no major damages.
The lock seems to be in working order but unfortunately the key is broken, though the lock is currently in the open position.
