*British, WW1, 9ct Gold & Enamel HMS Thunderer Sweetheart Brooch*
A 9ct gold and enamel Sweetheart Brooch of HMS Thunderer, featuring Thor, the God of Thunder, wielding a hammer. The brooch weighs 2.42 grams., 2.2cm x 2cm wide.
HMS Thunderer was the fourth and final Orion-class dreadnought battleship built for the Royal Navy in the early 1910s and participated in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. In 1921, it was converted into a training ship for naval cadets, serving in this role until it was sold for scrap in late 1926. A photo of the original HMS Thunderer crest from 1919 is attached. During the First World War, wives, sisters and girlfriends commonly wore pin-brooches depicting miniature badges of units in which male loved ones were serving.
The name THUNDERER was awarded to the Royal Naval Engineering College in 1947. When the name HMS THUNDERER was conferred upon the combined colleges of Keyham and Manadon, the 1919 battleship badge based on the original battleship’s gun tompions was re-adopted.
