*German, WW2, 1939 Spange to the Iron Cross 1st Class 1914, Maker Marked L/50 Gebruger Godet Berlin*
The 1939 Spange to the Iron Cross 1st Class 1914 was awarded to individuals who had received the 1st Class Iron Cross during World War I and subsequently earned the same class in World War II.
The Spange to the Iron Cross 1st Class had the same features obverse as the 2nd class, only larger, as the width changed to 45mm (the height stayed at 30mm). The Spange to the Iron Cross 1st Class features an eagle clutching an oak leaf wreath encircling a mobile swastika, positioned above a pebbled trapezoid with the year “1939”.
The clasp was worn directly on the uniform above the Iron Cross 1st Class, so the flat back has a pin and catch system rather than 4 prongs found on the 2nd Class. The fullback reverse has a soldered-on barrel hinge, soldered-on rectangular wire catch and straight pin. The pin is maker marked and indistinct but the characteristics suggest it could be L/50 the LDO code for Gebruger Godet Berlin.
