~ 18th Century Derby Porcelain Figure Group Of A Recumbent Stag ~
A beautiful 18th century (c.1760) Derby porcelain figure group of a recumbent stag with flowering bocage.
The piece depicts a stag sitting in front of a tree with flowers on a natural base.
The piece is hand painted in colours with the stag being white with brown highlights.
The piece is marked with an incised triangle but is otherwise unmarked, though there are four brown spots on the base, which are quite likely to be the points where supports were used to prevent the porcelain sticking during the firing of the glaze. This is typical of early soft paste Derby figures.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece has a width of 15cm (6 inches) and a height of 19cm (7 ½ inches).
It weighs 865g.
~ Condition ~
Two of the stags legs and the antlers have had some restoration which has been reasonably well done
The tip of one antler has been chipped and a couple of the flowers are also chipped.
Thankfully these damages do not detract from the beauty of the piece.
The piece is in an otherwise very nice condition.
There are some firing cracks to the underside of the piece but this is from the original process of manufacture and not damage.
