~ Imperial German Army Bavarian Reserve Officers M1871 Pickelhaube Helmet ~
A great example of this helmet, introduced just after the Franco Prussian war of 1870/71.
The helmet has a leather skull with a brass edge to the front visor and non-ventilated rear spine. The tall fluted spike has the characteristic string of pearls ring and rests on a cruciform base with four general officers stars. The chinstrap consists of brass scales over a leather backing with roundel bosses over both state and natoinal cockades. The front peak is lined with green silk, the rear one with red silk. The liner has a tan leather hat band with green silk liner. The wappen front plate has the Bavarian coat of arms with the reservist cross.
~ Condition ~
The leather skull has light crackling, the stitching is complete and tight. The gilding is quite worn and tarnished with age. The chinscales are complete and in good order as is the liner. Both state and national cockades are present. All parts are original except for the reserve cross which appears to be a recent replacement.
~ Dimensions ~
The helmet is 28 cm (11 inches) tall by 20 cm (8 inches) wide by 23 cm (9.25 inches) deep.
