Description

*WW1/WW2 Italian Naval Flare Pistol 'Pistola Savoia'*

The Pistola Savoia, is an Italian flare pistol. The name is engraved on the top of the receiver along with the coat of arms of the House of Savoy. The name "Savoia" refers to the House of Savoy, a royal family, who ruled Italy from the unification of Italy in 1861 until the end of World War II in 1946. The Ra. Marina Ital.A marking on the pistol indicates that it was made for the Italian Navy, with "Ra." standing for "Regia Armata" or "Royal Army" and "Marina Ital.A" standing for "Italian Navy." The use of the term "Regia Armata" on the pistol suggests that it was manufactured before 1946, as this term was replaced by "Esercito Italiano" after the end of the monarchy. The Brev. Tettoni marking on the pistol refers to the patent holder, Tettoni & Co, an Italian firearms manufacturer that was active from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. Based on these factors, it is likely that the Pistola Savoia, Ra. Marina Ital.A, Brev. Tettoni = Ditta Rocca was manufactured sometime between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century, likely during the early 20th century when flare pistols were commonly used by naval forces. The serial number 11456 is marked on the bottom of the frame and various proof marks at the top of the grip.

Flare pistols like this one were commonly used by naval forces for signaling purposes, as well as for illuminating the night sky during military operations. The Pistola Savoia, Ra. Marina Ital.A, Brev. Tettoni = Ditta Rocca is a historical artifact that provides a glimpse into the history of Italian naval technology and military strategy during the early 20th century.
