Description

~ c1860 J. Chard Remmey Pottery Philadelphia Slip-ware Dish Trial Piece ~

A rather unusual piece for Remmey as they are better known for their cobalt blue on white pieces. This one is more in the style of a Welsh piece from the same period with a brown on yellow pattern on a black background.

Underneath is a signature, J. Chard, either the owner or the potter which matches the handwriting of another piece sold by Crocker Farm auctions in their 25th of March 2023 attributed to Remmey and from the Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection.

~ Remmey Pottery ~

The Remmey family was involved in pottery production from the late 16th century in France. The first Remmey immigrant, Johannes (1706-1762) established a pottery in New York City in 1735.

His grandson, Henry (1775-1865) moved to Philadelphia in the early 1800s and established a pottery on Marshall Street. In 1817, the family opened a branch in Baltimore but that facility survived for only about 12 years when it  was closed.  The family continued to produce pottery in different forms in Philadelphia until the early 1980s.

~ Condition ~

Please refer to the images for condition, there is one chip to the rim. The glaze has crazed with age.

~ Dimensions ~

The dish is 24 cm (9.5 inches) in length and 12.5 cm (5 inches) wide.
