~ Japanese Lacquer Musical Jewellery Box c1940’s/50’s ~
A lovely early-mid 20th century Japanese black lacquer musical jewellery box.
The box is in the form of a chest, decorated in black lacquer with inlaid mother of pearl edging and hand painted with images of flowers and a bird.
The lid opens to reveal several compartments and a mirror on the back of the lid hand-painted with trees and mountains.
When the lid is opened the box plays a song, the mechanism being wound by a key to the underside.
The box is lockable and is complete with key.
~ Dimensions ~
The box measures 18.5cm (7 ¼ inches) by 12.5cm (5 inches) with a height of 10cm (4 inches).
It weighs 740g.
~ Condition ~
The material inside could do with a little cleaning (mainly years of dust rather than staining) but is generally in good order.
The box has a couple of tiny chips to the lacquer but is overall in a very nice condition.
