~ Framed Watercolour ‘Sailing Ships Off Coast’ by James Wilson Carmichael 1800-1868 ~
A fine quality small watercolour titled ‘Sailing Ships Off Coast’ by the British Marine artist James Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868).
The painting depicts, as the title suggests several sailing ships, one to the foreground the others in the background pictured at sea along a coastline.
The painting is beautifully executed with some great detail.
It is signed to the bottom left hand corner by the artist.
The painting is mounted and presented in a modern glazed frame.

The painting measures 9cm (3 ½ inches) by 13.5cm (5 ¼ inches).
The frame measures 26cm (10 ¼ inches) by 30cm (11 ¾ inches) and weighs 735g.
~ Condition ~
The painting is in a lovely condition with no foxing, fading or damage.
The mount and frame are in good order with just a few specks of dirt stuck between the mount and glass.
~ James Wilson Carmichael ~
James John Wilson Carmichael (9 June 1800 – 1868), also known as John Carmichael was an English marine painter.
After a short career in the carpentry business in his youth Carmichael went on to set himself up as a drawing-master and miniature painter.
He lived in Newcastle until about 1845, when he made the move to London, where he was already known as a skilful marine painter.
In 1855, during the Crimean War he was sent to the Baltic to make drawings for The Illustrated London News. His painting of the bombardment of Sveaborg, which he witnessed during this assignment, was exhibited at the Royal Academy and is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum.
He published The Art of Marine Painting in Water-Colours in 1859, and The Art of Marine Painting in Oil-Colours in 1864.
Carmichael exhibited at the Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy during his lifetime.
He died in Scarborough in 1868.
