Description

*WW1 Belgian M1916 Bayonet for 1889 Mauser Rifle with Matching Scabbard*

This is a Belgian M1916 Bayonet designed for the M1889 Mauser rifle, the primary firearm used by Belgian forces during World War I. Complete with its original steel scabbard. When Belgium was occupied by German forces in 1914, production of these bayonets was relocated to temporary facilities in Calais, France, and Birmingham, England. The M1916 bayonets were manufactured from 1916 to 1918 at the Manufacture D'Armes de le Etat (abbreviated as MAE), the overall finish of these bayonets is straightforward and rugged, reflecting the scarcity prevalent toward the end of the First World War.

The bayonet bears the serial number 38922, which is engraved on the cross-guard as well as on the oval frog stud located on the scabbard. Additionally, there is an engraved boxed letter "L" on the cross-guard. The ricasso of the bayonet features the marking of a "C" within an oval. The double-edged "fish bone" blade tapers to a spear point, and notably, the blade has not been shortened, measuring 44 cm in length. The hilt is characterized by a straight crossguard with muzzle ring, plain wooden grips secured to the tang with two screw bolts, and a pommel that incorporates a mortice slot and a button cross-bolt catch.

*Condition*
The bayonet is in good condition given its age and use. The mortice button works well the scabbard fits securely. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
