*German, WW2, Kriegsmarine U-Boat (Submarine) Clasp - Silver class, Marked Entwurf Peekhaus and AUSF Schwerin, Berlin 68, Made by Schwerin & Söhne*
This German Kriegsmarine U-Boat Front Clasp (U-Boots-Frontspange), Silver Class, is in very nice condition and is extremely hard to find. The clasp is marked with 'Entwurf Peekhaus' and 'Ausf. Schwerin, Berlin 68,' indicating it was produced by 'Schwerin & Söhne' from Berlin.
The U-Boat Front Clasp was instituted by Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine und Großadmiral Karl Dönitz on 15 May 1944. There were no specified merits for earning the award; decoration was based on recommendations from the U-boat commander and required approval by Karl Dönitz. On 24 November 1944, a silver version was introduced to further recognize bronze holders with continued merits and acts of valor.
Designed by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin, the badge features a central laurel wreath with a stylized submarine and wings of oak leaves. The wings on either side consist of six staggered oak leaves, totaling twelve. Two crossed swords decorate the bottom of the central wreath, and the submarine in the middle mimics the design of the U-Boat War Badge. The wreath is topped by an eagle with downward-turned wings holding a swastika.
