The South Atlantic Medal is a British campaign medal awarded to military personnel and civilians for their service in the 1982 Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina, with over 33,000 medals issued in total, with 6,968 medals issued to the British Army, most accompanied by a rosette. The obverse features a crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID" ("Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith"). The reverse displays the Falkland Islands' coat of arms with the motto "DESIRE THE RIGHT," alluding to the ship of English explorer John Davis, encircled by a laurel wreath and the words "SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL." The 32 mm ribbon includes a central "sea green" stripe flanked by white and "empire blue" stripes, symbolizing the Atlantic Ocean. A medal with a rosette was awarded for one day's service within 35° and 60° South latitude or at least one operational sortie south of Ascension Island between 2 April and 14 June 1982. This typically indicated service in the combat zone.
The Falklands Conflict was a short undeclared war between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and cost over 900 lives.
