Description

*British, WW2, HM Submarine Umbra - Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Submarine HMS Umbra. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 24.cm x 15cm (Written on the back - "Umbra")

HMS Umbra (P35) was a Royal Navy U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrongs at Barrow-in-Furness, and the only vessel to bear the name.

Service History
Operating mainly in the Mediterranean, Umbra sank several Italian cargo ships, including Assunta De Gregori, Francesco Barbaro, and Sacro Cuore, as well as the German Süllberg. She also torpedoed the damaged Italian cruiser Trento on 15 June 1942 and attempted an attack on the battleship Littorio, though her torpedoes missed.

Umbra later destroyed the grounded Italian supply ship Amsterdam and sank the tug Pronta attempting to salvage her. She damaged the troop ship Piemonte and the cargo ship Napoli, which was later destroyed by air attacks. She also crippled the German Macedonia, forcing her abandonment.

Her final actions included attacking the Italian sailing vessels Nuovo Domenico and Concetta Falco by gunfire in January 1943.

Umbra survived the war and was scrapped on 9 July 1946.
