Description

*British, Post WW2, The damaged HM Submarine Finwhale (SO5) 1961 – Original Photograph*

Original Wire Photograph of Post WW2 Submarine Finwhale. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 12.9cm x 18.1cm.

The front is marked for cropping. The back: Stamped 11 Apr 1961. Daily Express Wire Photo Glasgow. "There will now be a two picture broadcast from Glasgow - follows:- Picture is Glasgow. 2. Comma. P. Waddman comes down from conning tower into damaged part of submarine Finwhale as he dares to come aboard "Adamant". Newspaper article: "One of Britain's latest submarines, the £2,500,000 "Porpoise" Class, Finwhale, arrived back in the Gareloch today with a huge hole in her casing after a 29 day patrol under the Artic ice cap. When the submarine tied up alongside H.H.S. Adamant, depot ship of the 3rd Submarine Squadron at Faslane, she had a 20 foot long dent measuring six foot across, with a six foot by two foot hole, just forward of her conning tower."

HMS Finwhale (S05) was the fifth Porpoise-class submarine of the Royal Navy, launched on 21 July 1959 and commissioned on 19 August 1960.

During her first commission, she set a record for the farthest submarine journey under ice. Recommissioned on 27 January 1964, she surpassed her previous Arctic patrol in March 1965, reaching 95 miles into the ice. Finwhale participated in Portsmouth Navy Days in 1965 and 1966. While serving in the Far East, she was fitted with an Oerlikon deck gun. From 1979 to 1987, she was used as a harbour training vessel before being towed for scrapping in Spain on 28 March 1988. She remains the only Royal Navy vessel named after the fin whale.
