Description

*Post-War European Naval Diver’s Knife with Rare Brass Scabbard, Likely by Siebe Gorman & Co Ltd*

Approximate measurements:
Blade: 19.5cm long, 4cm wide
Overall: 33.5cm

This is a fine example of a post-WWII European naval diver’s knife, featuring a double-edged steel blade with turned Bakelite handle and brass fittings. The blade is consistent with those produced by Siebe Gorman & Co Ltd., a renowned supplier of diving equipment to the Royal Navy and other forces. While not all knives were manufacturer-stamped, the form and construction are typical of the period and maker.

The knife is housed in a particularly rare and unusual push-in brass scabbard. It is likely to be a field fabrication bespoke to the divers requirements. Unlike the more commonly encountered designs, this scabbard is a flat, rectangular form with a looped top attachment for securing to a belt or diving harness. Made from corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic brass, it was well suited for underwater operations, avoiding interference with navigation or equipment.

These scabbards were used primarily by Royal Navy and European diving units and are now exceptionally hard to find—this is the only example of its type we have encountered. A superb and distinctive piece for any serious collector of naval or diving equipment.

*Condition*
Good used condition. The blade shows some tarnishing and minor pitting commensurate with service. There are some chips to the top 3 rings and the main body of the grip. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
