*British, Interwar-1937, Rowntree Coronation Souvenir Tin, Presented by Shoreditch Borough Council*
This charming commemorative tin was produced by Rowntree & Co. Ltd of York, England to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May 1937. Unusually, this example was presented specifically by the Shoreditch Borough Council, as printed on the lid, making it a scarce and distinctive civic souvenir.
The tin features vibrant portraits of the King and Queen in full coronation regalia, flanked by royal cyphers and crowned monograms against a gold background. The base is marked "Rowntree & Co. Ltd, York, England, Cocoa & Chocolate Makers," confirming its authentic origin.
A particularly rare feature is the inclusion of the small cloth bag, similar to a soft glasses pouch but shorter and without drawstrings. We believe that this bag would have originally held a commemorative chocolate bar, protecting it from direct contact with the metal tin. Today, such inserts are seldom found intact, adding to the historical appeal of this piece.

The tin displays typical age-related wear, with surface scratches and edge rubbing consistent with storage and handling. The portraits remain clear and bright. The interior is clean and includes the original cloth bag, which shows light staining and age toning. Hinges work smoothly, and lid closes securely.
