*British, c.1917–1920s, Framed Portrait Photograph — Lawrence of Arabia Interest, Thought to Depict T.E. Lawrence, with Additional Photo*
A striking, original period photographic portrait of a man in Arab dress, strongly evoking the iconic imagery of Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"). The larger sepia-toned photograph measures approximately 15.2cm x 21.5cm and shows a young man wearing a keffiyeh and traditional embroidered robe. This image resonates with the known portraits of Lawrence in Arab dress taken during or shortly after the Arab Revolt (1916–1918), though no direct attribution or photographer’s stamp is present.
The photograph is presented in a vintage glazed frame with ornate black-painted moulding (approx. 28.8cm x 34.8cm overall), showing areas of wear and small losses consistent with age. Mounted within the frame, at the lower right, is a smaller unrelated black-and-white snapshot (approx. 8.5cm x 6cm) depicting an older gentleman in a vest and tie, possibly a family member or friend of the original owner.
Colonel T.E. Lawrence (1888–1935) became legendary for his role in the Arab Revolt and is widely recognized in his flowing Arab attire, immortalized in contemporary photographs and later film portrayals. Known as "Lawrence of Arabia," he was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer whose knowledge of the Middle East and daring guerrilla tactics played a pivotal role in the Arab campaigns against Ottoman rule during the First World War. After the war, his memoir Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1926) solidified his romantic and enigmatic image, later inspiring the celebrated 1962 film starring Peter O'Toole. Despite his fame, Lawrence sought anonymity in his later years, serving under assumed names before his untimely death in a motorcycle accident in 1935 aged 46.
A fascinating piece for collectors of Lawrence memorabilia, military history enthusiasts, or those interested in early 20th-century photographic portraiture, this evocative period photograph captures the mystique and allure associated with Lawrence’s legend.
