Description

*British, WWII, ARP Air Raid Precautions Whistle by J. Hudson & Co., Birmingham*

A fine original WWII British Air Raid Precautions (ARP) whistle, clearly marked “A.R.P.” on the barrel, above the maker’s stamp “J. Hudson & Co., Barr St. Hockley, Birmingham.” Measuring approximately 8.2cm including the suspension loop, this example is constructed from nickel-plated brass, a robust design typical of wartime production. The whistle features a standard tubular body with a single rectangular sound aperture, and a fixed top loop for attachment to uniform lanyards or chains.

Historical background:
The Air Raid Precautions (ARP) organisation was established in 1937 in preparation for aerial bombardment of civilian areas during World War II. ARP wardens played a crucial role in enforcing blackouts, sounding alarms, guiding people to shelters, and coordinating first aid and rescue during and after raids. Whistles such as this were issued as an essential signalling tool to ARP wardens and other civil defence personnel, allowing them to direct civilians quickly in the chaos of an air raid. J. Hudson & Co. of Birmingham, founded in the 1870s, was the leading manufacturer of official whistles for British police and military services, and their wartime ARP whistles are among the most recognised and collected today.

*Condition*
Good overall condition, showing age-related surface wear and minor tarnishing consistent with service use. The stamped markings are crisp and clearly legible. No cracks or structural damage; the loop is intact and firmly attached. Overall, a well-preserved example of an iconic civilian defence item from WWII. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
