*Imperial German, 1915, WW1, 2nd Pattern Butcher Bayonet (M1898/05 nA), Alex Coppel Solingen, with Steel Scabbard*
A fine original example of the German WW1 M1898/05 "Butcher" bayonet, second pattern (nA — neuer Art, or new type), complete with its original all-steel scabbard.
This bayonet features the classic broad, single-fullered blade measuring approx. 36.8 cm, with an overall length of 50 cm. The blade is clearly marked "ALEX COPPEL, SOLINGEN", a respected Solingen maker renowned for quality edged weapons.
The spine is stamped crown/W/15, indicating acceptance under Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1915.
This is the second pattern variant, introduced in 1915 to simplify and improve the design. It is distinguished by:
-No muzzle ring, streamlining production and reducing weight.
-Removal of crossguard "ears", seen on earlier types.
-Addition of a steel flashguard (fire guard) over the tang, protecting the grip from muzzle blast when firing the rifle.
The ribbed wooden grips are in good condition with service wear but no major cracks. The pommel slot and press-stud locking mechanism are complete and functional, as shown in detail. Additional inspection and unit marks are visible on the tang and pommel.
The all-steel scabbard is present and complete, showing extensive surface pitting and rust consistent with hard field service, but remains solid and securely fits the bayonet.
Historical note
The M1898/05 was designed as a practical replacement for the longer, more fragile quillback bayonets of the early war years. Its robust build earned it the nickname "Butcher blade" (Schlachtmesser) among Allied troops. The second pattern (nA), introduced from 1915, was simplified to speed up production and improve battlefield handling. The addition of the flashguard was a key innovation to prevent damage to the grips during firing.
Alex Coppel of Solingen was a leading German blade manufacturer, supplying large quantities of bayonets and swords throughout WW1, making marked examples especially collectible.
*Condition*
Blade shows age-related staining and pitting but retains clear maker and acceptance markings. Wooden grips are solid, showing honest service wear. Pommel and press-stud mechanism fully functional. Steel scabbard exhibits heavy pitting and rust, with corrosion losses but is structurally sound and complete with frog stud. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
