Description

*British, c.1905, Edwardian Mahogany Cellarette on Brass Castors*

An Edwardian mahogany cellarette of rectangular form, raised on square tapering legs with original brass and ceramic castors. The hinged lid opens to reveal a six-compartment fitted interior for wine or spirits. A brass handle is fitted to the front, alongside an oval escutcheon; the original brass and steel lock and key are present but detached (damage to surrounding veneer visible). Larger brass handles are fitted to either side. The lid is supported on twin restraining straps, closing neatly against a crossbanded edge with fine grain figuring to the top.

Dimensions: 36.5 cm wide × 27.5 cm deep × 53 cm tall (including castors).

Historical Note:
Cellarettes became an essential element of refined Edwardian dining-room furniture, designed to store and serve wine conveniently near the table. While earlier Georgian examples were often circular and lined with lead or tin, later portable types like this adopted neat rectangular cabinet forms, suited to townhouses or officers’ messes. The example shown here displays typical late Edwardian cabinetmaking traits: mahogany veneer on a solid frame, dovetailed joinery, and brass-mounted castors for mobility.

*Condition*
Structurally sound with good colour and polish to the mahogany, showing age-related scuffs, surface marks and small veneer losses. Lock mechanism detached (plate and key included separately). Minor splits to base boards and interior wear consistent with age and use. Brass fittings with natural oxidation. Retains an attractive warm patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
