*German, WWII, Reichsfinanzverwaltung Zolldienst (Customs/Border Guard) Sleeve Badge, Serial No. 33023*
An original WWII-period German Reichsfinanzverwaltung (Reich Finance Administration) Zolldienst metal sleeve badge, measuring approximately 8.2 cm x 6.2 cm. Cast in nickel-silver alloy with a textured matte background, the oval plaque bears a high-relief Reichsadler (State Eagle) clutching a wreath-encircled swastika, surrounded by the raised Gothic inscription: “Reichsfinanzverwaltung – Grenzschutz – Zollgrenzschutz” (Reich Finance Administration – Border Protection – Customs Border Guard).
The right-hand side features an applied raised cartouche stamped with serial number 33023. Eight small mounting holes allowed attachment to the uniform sleeve or tunic. Reverse shows typical die-struck impression with period toning and light age oxidation.
Historical Note:
The Zollgrenzschutz (Customs Border Guard) was a paramilitary formation under the Reich Ministry of Finance, tasked with customs enforcement, anti-smuggling operations, and border security within occupied Europe. Initially a civilian organization, it grew into a uniformed and armed auxiliary force numbering over 50,000 men by the later war years. The serial number 33023 falls within the mid-war issue range, likely allocated to a Zollgrenzschutz or customs office in occupied Central Europe (Austrian or Bohemian border region) under the Reich Finance Administration.
These metal sleeve badges were worn by personnel of the Reichsfinanzverwaltung to identify their authority in customs and border matters. Earlier badges were die-struck in aluminum or zinc, while later-war examples show simplified finishes or cast manufacture. Each was individually numbered and issued to a specific officer or customs post.
