*Chinese, c.1970s,PLA Type 69-1 RPG (69-1-40火, Factory 197, NORINCO Manufacture), with Inert Replica Rocket*
A very good example of the Chinese Type 69-1 rocket-tube weapon system, the improved PLA development of the original Type 69 (itself a Chinese reverse-engineered evolution of the Soviet RPG-7). This launcher displays all features correct to the Type 69-1 pattern: the distinctive single pistol grip, forward carry handle, long deeply fluted brown phenolic handguard, and the characteristic PLA dual adjustable folding sights, which differentiate the 69-1 from both the earlier Type 69 and all Soviet RPG-7 variants.
The firing mechanism is crisply stamped 69-1-40火, where 40火 is the PLA functional shorthand for a “40 mm rocket-tube weapon” (火箭筒 / huǒjiàntǒng). In Chinese ordnance classification, 火箭筒 refers broadly to tubular, shoulder-launched anti-armour weapons firing rocket or rocket-assisted projectiles, including recoilless rifle-type systems as well as RPG-pattern launchers. Within this nomenclature the stamp correctly identifies the launcher as a Type 69-1 / 40 mm rocket-tube system.
To the left of the model code is the circular “197” factory identifier. During this period, China’s small-arms production was decentralised across numerous numbered state factories operating under the umbrella of NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation). Factory 197 is known to have participated in the manufacture of rocket launchers and tubular anti-armour systems. Its circled code, together with several small Chinese inspection stamps, is entirely consistent with NORINCO’s export-standard marking practice of the 1970s. Serial 610042 remains clear and legible. Supplied with an inert display rocket.
Historical Note:
China’s development of rocket-tube weapons unfolded across three key generations. The Type 56 (Chinese RPG-2 derivative) entered production in 1956 and was exported widely. In 1969 China adopted the Type 69, a reverse-engineered copy of the Soviet RPG-7, and shortly afterwards introduced the improved Type 69-1, incorporating strengthened components and enhanced sighting gear to meet PLA requirements and export specifications.
The weapon was developed for and issued by the PLA — the People’s Liberation Army, the unified armed forces of the People’s Republic of China, comprising the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force and Strategic Support Force. From the 1960s onward the PLA oversaw a major expansion of indigenous weapons development, feeding both domestic needs and China’s extensive Cold War export networks. The Type 69-1 saw service with the PLA during the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese Border Conflict, and became one of NORINCO’s most widely exported anti-armour weapons, appearing throughout the Middle East, Africa, South-East Asia and in numerous revolutionary and insurgent movements.
Markings on export models such as this one were frequently "sanitised" in accordance with Chinese foreign-policy practice: weapons intended for external supply often avoided overt national identifiers. The presence of the model/calibre code (69-1-40火), a serial number, and the discreet circular Factory 197 stamp conforms exactly to these PLA/NORINCO export conventions.
*Condition*
Very good overall condition for a Cold War Chinese launcher. Deactivated. Cocks and dry-fires. Metalwork shows light handling wear and small abrasions in places, consistent with service use prior to deactivation. The phenolic heat shield has several service-related dents, small perforations and stress marks (see photographs), and an area of damage around the foregrip band—typical of field wear on 1970s tubes. The wooden pistol grip shows age-darkening and varnish wear but is stable and original. Sights complete and functioning. Inert replica projectile in excellent display condition. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
