*German, Third Reich Period - WWII, NSDAP Political Visor Cap Eagle, 1936 Pattern, RZM M1/34 (Karl Wurster), Gilt Alloy Construction*
A well-preserved and original German Third Reich NSDAP political visor cap eagle of the 1936 pattern, retaining good definition to the feathering and wreath, and bearing a clear RZM M1/34 maker’s mark to the reverse, attributable to Karl Wurster of Markneukirchen.
The eagle is of stamped construction in a gilt-finished alloy, likely cupal or brass-based, with the original gold wash now showing honest wear and areas of underlying copper tone visible through handling and age. The obverse displays the characteristic outstretched-wing eagle clutching a wreath enclosing the swastika, with crisp detailing still evident across the breast, wings, and wreath border.
The reverse is clearly stamped with the RZM roundel over M1/34, confirming production under the authority of the Reichszeugmeisterei, the official body responsible for regulating NSDAP uniform insignia manufacture from the mid-1930s onward. This marking identifies the piece as the work of Karl Wurster, a recognised and well-documented maker of political insignia during the period.
The eagle exhibits a slight asymmetry in the wing alignment, giving a subtly “slanted” appearance. This is attributable to minor manufacturing variance during the stamping and trimming process and is consistent with period production methods, rather than damage or later alteration.
Approx. Measurements – Width: 4.1 cm. Height: 2.3 cm.
History Note:
Following the consolidation of power in the mid-1930s, the NSDAP introduced standardised uniform insignia regulated by the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM). The 1936 pattern political eagle became the standard cap insignia for party officials, replacing earlier variations and ensuring uniformity across ranks and organisations.
RZM markings, such as M1/34, indicate authorised production by approved manufacturers, with M1 denoting metal insignia. Karl Wurster of Markneukirchen was among the firms contracted to produce these items, supplying components for political uniforms during the pre-war and early wartime years.
Examples such as this represent the regulated and centralised nature of NSDAP insignia production, and remain a key collecting field within Third Reich militaria.
*Condition*
The badge remains in solid, untouched condition with no signs of repair or reproduction. The gilt finish shows expected wear, with areas of thinning and coppery base metal visible, particularly to the high points. The reverse retains the RZM marking clearly. All original attachment prongs are now absent or worn down, a common occurrence with these insignia due to removal from caps or long-term handling. The edges show minor wear consistent with age. Overall, a genuine example displaying honest service wear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
