*German, WWII, Luftwaffe M38 Fallschirmjäger Paratrooper Helmet, Size 59, Complete with Karl Heister Liner & Chinstrap, Single Decal (Reapplied)*
A scarce and highly desirable original Second World War German Luftwaffe M38 Fallschirmjäger helmet, retaining its original shell, liner and chinstrap assembly, and presenting as a complete example of the iconic German paratrooper combat helmet.
The helmet is of the correct M38 pattern, with its distinctive smooth, brimless profile designed to reduce wind resistance and improve stability during parachute operations. The shell retains its original wartime finish, now worn to a dark, honest patina with areas of surface oxidation and age-related wear consistent with service use. The left side bears a Luftwaffe eagle decal. This has been reapplied at a later date, as evidenced by its wear pattern and positioning over the patinated surface, and is therefore not considered original to the helmet. The shell retains its correct spanner-type liner retaining bolts and is stamped to the inner rim with a partially visible maker’s code and size marking, the latter clearly reading 71. The manufacturer stamp and lot number are indistinct due to wear and period overstamping, though the lot number appears to end “547”. The configuration is consistent with wartime Fallschirmjäger helmet production.
The interior is fitted with a correct and original Fallschirmjäger liner, clearly stamped: “Kopfweite Gr. 59” (Head size approximately 59 cm); “Stahlhaube Nr. 71” (Steel helmet size 71) and additionally marked: “Karl Heister Berlin C.2 D.R.G.M.” confirming manufacture by Karl Heister, one of the principal suppliers of paratrooper helmet liners to the Luftwaffe. The liner remains complete, showing service wear but retaining its original structure and integrity. The aluminium liner band and internal padding are present. The helmet retains its original Fallschirmjäger chinstrap assembly, complete with correct hardware. The leather shows wear consistent with age, but remains intact and displayable.
History Note:
The M38 Fallschirmjäger helmet was developed specifically for German paratroopers following early airborne operations, where the standard Stahlhelm proved unsuitable. Its compact, brimless form and reinforced liner system provided improved protection during jumps and combat landings. Issued primarily to elite Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger units, these helmets saw service in key operations including the invasions of Norway and Crete, and later defensive campaigns across Europe.
