*British, c.1845–1870, Victorian Copper Powder Flask with Sykes Patent Adjustable Charger*
A good Victorian copper and brass powder flask fitted with a Sykes Patent adjustable charger, manufactured in Sheffield during the mid-19th century for use with percussion muzzle-loading sporting firearms.
The flask is of traditional bag form with a deeply fluted copper body tapering towards the charger neck. The body is decorated with pronounced vertical ribbing terminating in a stylised collar with small bead and scroll ornament, typical of mid-Victorian sporting flask designs.
The charger assembly is of brass and incorporates the well-known Sykes Patent adjustable measuring system, the rotating sleeve allowing the powder charge to be set to three different measures. The sliding charger shutter is clearly stamped “SYKES PATENT”, confirming the use of William Sykes’ Sheffield patented design.
The adjustable charger is graduated for 2¼, 2½ and 2¾ and 3 drams, the selected charge aligning with the measuring chamber when rotated. This system allowed shooters to dispense consistent powder charges directly from the flask when loading muzzle-loading shotguns or rifles.
Approx. Measurements – Height: 21.5 cm. Width: 8.5 cm.
History Note:
During the percussion era of the mid-19th century, powder flasks formed an essential part of the shooter’s equipment. Sheffield was the principal centre for their manufacture, producing flasks in copper and brass for both military and civilian markets. The Sykes Patent adjustable charger became the most widely used measuring system of the period, allowing shooters to select a precise powder charge without the need for a separate measure.
Many Sheffield makers, including G. & J.W. Hawksley and James Dixon & Sons, fitted Sykes chargers to their flasks, and the design became standard on Victorian sporting powder flasks used for muzzle-loading shotguns and rifles.
*Condition*
The flask remains in good antique condition. The copper body displays an attractive aged patina with scattered small marks, surface wear and minor verdigris spotting. The charger sleeve is clearly stamped “SYKES PATENT”. There are no major dents or structural damage noted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
