*French Line (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique), c.1950s, SS Île de France Ocean Liner Cap Tally / Sailor Hat Ribbon with French Tricolour and CGT House Flag*
An attractive vintage cap tally (sailor’s hat ribbon) for the famous French ocean liner SS Île de France, operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT), internationally marketed as the French Line. The cream silk or satin ribbon is embroidered in gold thread with the ship’s name “ILE DE FRANCE”, flanked by the French tricolour flag on one side and the CGT company house flag on the other.
The CGT flag incorporates the distinctive red globe motif with small lettering reading “Cie Gle Transatlantique” (an abbreviation of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique), a branding element commonly used on French Line memorabilia and promotional material. Cap tallies of this type were worn around the sailor-style bachi cap or sold as souvenirs to passengers during special events on board such as gala evenings.
Examples of this cream or white type were often produced as decorative souvenirs rather than standard uniform issue pieces and were popular with passengers on the North Atlantic liners during the mid-20th century.
Approx. Measurements – Length: 67 cm. Width: 3 cm.
History Note:
The ocean liner SS Île de France was launched in 1927 and became one of the most celebrated French transatlantic liners. After wartime service in World War II, where she was converted into a troopship and transported Allied forces, the ship returned to passenger service following a major refit in 1949. During the 1950s she regained international fame and earned the nickname “St. Bernard of the Atlantic” after assisting in the rescue operations following the sinking of the Italian liner Andrea Doria in 1956. Souvenir items such as cap tallies were commonly sold or distributed aboard the ship during this final decade of service.
