Description

*British, c.1993–1994, Manchester Olympic Bid 2000 Enamel Lapel Badge – Olympic Rings – Original Case*

A commemorative enamel lapel badge produced as part of Manchester’s campaign to host the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. The badge features the distinctive Manchester Olympic Bid logo, showing stylised red and blue Olympic flames rising from a black cauldron, with the Olympic rings below and the surrounding inscription “The British Olympic Bid – Manchester 2000.”

The badge is finished in gilt-tone metal with coloured enamel detailing and retains its original clutch pin fitting to the reverse. It is housed in its original small presentation box with blue felt interior, as issued during the promotional campaign.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 2.5 cm. Width: 2.1 cm.

History Note:
Manchester’s bid for the 2000 Olympic Games formed part of a major effort during the early 1990s to regenerate the city through international sport. The campaign was officially launched by Prime Minister John Major in February 1993 and involved substantial investment proposals for new sporting infrastructure. Although Manchester progressed to the later rounds of selection, the games were ultimately awarded to Sydney, Australia in 1993.

Despite the unsuccessful outcome, the bid left a lasting legacy for the city. Several planned facilities were realised, including the Manchester Velodrome and major sporting infrastructure later used for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, with the stadium built for that event becoming the present-day Etihad Stadium.

Badges such as this were produced for supporters, officials and promotional events connected with the bid and today form part of the wider field of Olympic and British sporting memorabilia collecting.

*Condition*
The badge remains in very good condition overall with bright gilt finish and intact enamel colours. The pin clasp functions correctly. Light handling marks visible to the reverse and minor surface wear consistent with age. The original plastic presentation box shows light storage wear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
