*British, WWII, War Medal 1939–1945 – George VI Issue, Original Ribbon*
An original British World War II War Medal 1939–1945, awarded to full-time personnel of the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy for at least 28 days of service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. This is the standard silver-coloured cupro-nickel issue bearing the crowned head of King George VI to the obverse and the iconic lion standing over the defeated eagle and dragon to the reverse, symbolising victory over the Axis powers.
The obverse carries the legend “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP” surrounding the left-facing crowned portrait of King George VI. The reverse, designed by Edward Carter Preston (initials E.C.P. visible), shows the triumphant lion standing over a double-headed monster representing the enemy powers, with the dates 1939 and 1945 above. The medal retains its correct original ribbon of red, white and blue stripes and is neatly court mounted for wear or display.
History Note:
Instituted in 1945, the War Medal was awarded to millions of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who served during the Second World War, regardless of theatre, provided they completed the qualifying service. It was commonly issued alongside campaign stars such as the 1939–45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, and France & Germany Star, forming the core of many wartime medal groups. Unlike campaign stars, the War Medal recognised overall wartime service and remains one of the most recognisable British military decorations of the period.
*Condition*
Condition is very good overall, with crisp detail to both obverse and reverse and an attractive untouched finish. Ribbon remains bright and well presented though with a few small moth nips/age holes visible to the ribbon. Suspension and mounting bar remain secure. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
A classic and highly collectible original Second World War campaign medal, ideal for display, research, or as part of a larger medal group.
