Description

*British Army, Post-WWII, Sergeant’s Rank Chevrons – Matched Pair, Red Backed Cloth Sleeve Insignia*

A very attractive and original matched pair of British Army Sergeant’s rank chevrons, featuring two black embroidered stripes on bright red cloth backing, the classic insignia of the rank of Sergeant within the British Army. These full-size cloth sleeve badges were worn on both upper sleeves of battledress blouses, service dress tunics, and No.2 Dress uniforms, making a complete matching pair far more desirable than single surviving examples.

Each badge is of traditional inverted “V” form with the point worn downward toward the cuff, comprising two machine-embroidered black worsted chevrons neatly applied to a vivid red felt backing with cream cloth reverse. This style is typical of 1940s-1960s British Army issue and private purchase examples, commonly associated with service dress and ceremonial wear, with red-backed examples often seen in artillery and other regimental distinctions depending on branch and period.

Approx. Measurements – Width: 10.2 cm. Height: 8 cm.

History Note:
The rank of Sergeant has long represented one of the key senior Non-Commissioned Officer appointments within the British Army, positioned above Corporal and below Staff Sergeant. Sergeants were responsible for discipline, training, and direct leadership of soldiers at company and platoon level. Their sleeve chevrons formed one of the most instantly recognisable symbols of authority within British military dress, worn as a pair—one on each upper sleeve—rather than singly.

A strong original matched pair of classic British Army NCO insignia, ideal for collectors of militaria, uniform restoration, mannequin display, or regimental research.

*Condition*
Condition is very good overall with light service wear, minor age-related handling marks, and good strong colour to the red backing and black embroidery. Both remain matching examples with no major damage. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
