Description

*US, Modern Reproduction, American Civil War Style Union Army Kepi -  Forage Cap, with Eagle Side Buttons, Large*

An attractive display example of a dark blue wool Civil War-style kepi / forage cap, made in the style of the Union Army forage caps worn during the American Civil War (1861–1865). This is a later reproduction piece rather than an original period example, produced for historical reenactment, theatre, display, or collector use, but convincingly styled after the classic Federal issue cap.

The cap features the characteristic flat circular crown, sloping sides, stiffened black leather peak, and black leather chinstrap secured by side-mounted General Service eagle buttons. These buttons carry the familiar Federal eagle motif with shield, olive branch and arrows, closely following the standard U.S. Army pattern used on wartime and post-war uniforms. The dark navy wool body reflects the traditional Union Army colour scheme, while the artificial wear and powdering to the exterior has been deliberately applied to create a period “campaign-used” appearance.

Approx. Measurements – Internal size marked: Large (L).

A strong decorative and display piece—ideal for Civil War collections, historical interpretation, theatre costume, or military display.

History Note:
The Union Army forage cap, often referred to as a kepi, was based on the French military pattern and became standard issue for Federal troops throughout the Civil War. Officers and enlisted men alike wore variations of this style, often with corps badges, branch insignia, or rank cords added. Side-mounted eagle buttons secured the leather chinstrap and remain one of the easiest identifying features of original U.S. military headwear of the period.

Kepis and forage caps became iconic symbols of both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War, though the dark blue Federal kepi remains the most recognisable. Original examples are highly sought after and command strong prices, leading to a large market in quality reproductions for reenactors and collectors. This example offers the correct visual impact of a wartime Union cap at a fraction of the cost of an original.

*Condition*
Modern reproduction example with deliberate artificial ageing and distressing throughout to simulate age and service wear. Surface powdering and rubbed finish are part of the intended appearance rather than damage. Interior clean and complete with lining present. Chinstrap and buttons intact. Structurally sound for display. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

We have several virtually identical examples available in size Large; one will be selected at random from current stock, all being of the same pattern and comparable condition.
