Description

*Zulu / Southern African, 19th Century, Iklwa Short Stabbing Spear with Hardwood Haft and Forged Iron Blade*

A highly attractive and characterful Southern African iklwa-style stabbing spear, retaining its long hardwood haft, hand-forged iron blade, and distinctive twisted iron socket. This is a classic close-combat spear of traditional Zulu form, with a broad leaf-shaped blade designed for thrusting combat rather than throwing, giving the piece strong visual and historical presence.

The spear measures approximately 106.8 cm overall, with the forged iron head and socket assembly measuring approximately 37.5 cm. The blade is of elongated leaf form with a pronounced central ridge, tapering to a sharp stabbing point. The ironwork displays clear hand-forged characteristics throughout, particularly around the twisted socket transition beneath the blade, a visually striking feature typical of traditional forge-working. The blade retains an attractive aged surface with deep dark patination and areas of natural pitting and oxidation consistent with age.

The hardwood shaft is well proportioned and gently tapering, terminating in a flattened butt end. Beneath the socket is a tightly woven plaited fibre or reed binding, serving as both reinforcement and grip. The shaft itself displays good age colour and handling wear throughout, entirely consistent with traditional Southern African construction methods.

Approx. Measurements – Blade and socket length: 37.5 cm. Overall length: 106.8 cm.

History Note:
The iklwa became one of the defining weapons of the Zulu military system during the reign of King Shaka in the early 19th century. Unlike earlier lighter throwing spears, the iklwa was specifically developed for close-quarter combat, featuring a broader blade and shorter, stronger shaft intended for thrusting attacks. Variants of this form remained in use throughout the 19th century during the period of Zulu expansion and the later Anglo-Zulu conflicts. The broad blade, strong socket, and durable hardwood haft made the weapon highly effective in hand-to-hand fighting.

*Condition*
Condition is good overall for age and type. The iron blade retains a dark aged surface with pitting, oxidation, and visible forge texture throughout. The shaft shows expected age wear, surface marks, and minor knocks from handling and use. The woven binding remains largely intact with some minor wear and lifting in places. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
