Description

*British, Early to Mid 20th Century, Plain Brass Rectangular Tobacco / Trinket Box*

A simple but attractive plain brass rectangular box dating from the early to mid 20th century, of clean utilitarian form with rounded corners and hinged lid. The box is entirely unmarked and likely intended for use as a gentleman’s tobacco box, desk box, trinket container, or small storage casket.

Constructed from folded brass sheet with a full-width rear hinge, the piece has developed an appealing aged golden patina with darker areas of oxidation and scattered verdigris spots consistent with age. The plain undecorated exterior gives the box a restrained military or campaign-style appearance, although no direct service markings are present.

The interior remains plain and untreated, showing age-related tarnishing and oxidation from prolonged use and storage.

Approx. Measurements – Width: 7.8 cm. Depth: 5.7 cm. Height: 3.6 cm.

History Note:
Plain brass boxes of this type were widely produced during the late Victorian period through to the mid 20th century for a variety of domestic and personal uses including tobacco storage, keepsake containers, dressing-table boxes, and travel or campaign kit items. Their durable construction and compact proportions made them popular for both civilian and military use.

*Condition*
The box displays age-related surface wear, scratching, tarnishing, oxidation, and small areas of verdigris throughout. Interior heavily tarnished with surface corrosion residue visible. Hinge remains intact and the lid opens and closes correctly. No visible maker’s marks or inscriptions. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
