~ Circa 1896 Bronze Memorial Statue Of A German Soldier By R. Bellair & Co. ~
This is a finely cast bronze memorial statue dating to the late 19th century of the German soldier First Lieutenant Leopold Von Schorlemmer and was made by R. Bellair & Co. of Berlin.
The soldier is in his full campaign kit including his pickelhaube helmet, rifle and rucksack.
The statue stands on a black lacquered wooden plinth with a felt underside.
To the front of the plinth is a plaque surrounded by a wreath. The plaque, in German, translates as…
‘His distinctive comrades, First Lieutenant Leopold Von Schorlemmer the Officer Corps of the Fusilier Regiments of Magdeburg No. 36, 14/4/1885-17/7/1896’.
The statue has a stamp behind the soldiers right foot for the founder ‘R. Bellair & Co. Of Berlin’.
~ Dimensions ~
The plinth measures 4 ¼ inches (11cm) wide by 5 ¼ inches (13.5cm) deep by 6 ½ inches (16.5cm) high.
The plinth and bronze together measure 17 inches (43.25cm) high.
The total weight is 2.690 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in fine condition. The bronze has a wonderful deep patina. The plinth has only a couple of minor scratches.
The statue is firmly attached to the plinth in the centre by presumably a screw but has come unstuck so that the statue is able to swivel freely.
