~ 14th Century Limestone Mary & Jesus Carved Figure ~
A nicely carved limestone figure of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus dating to the 14th Century.
It is a freestanding figure hand carved from a single piece of limestone.
It depicts the Virgin Mary with right hand raised in blessing holding the baby Jesus in her left.
The piece was excavated from a field in Exeter some years back and has been in private hands till we purchased it.
Its original purpose is not known, but presumably it was an altar piece or possibly a ceremonial offering.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece stands at 17cm (6 ¾ inches) and weighs 430g.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in a remarkably good condition with only light areas of wear but no real damages.
