An interesting very long service East India Company 1798 dated Brown Bess that has been re-serviced and converted to percussion.
The lockplate is marked with the EIC logo, dated1798 and bears the manufacturer’s mark ‘HIRST’.
The barrel is stamped with a series of proofmarks and serial numbered. Please see the pictures.
The furniture has been refurbished and modified to the percussion standards, but the workmanship was quite crude. Most probably done in India. The butstock features a trapdoor compartment for a spear round.
The piece comes with its bayonet and scabbard.
The white leather sling is also present.
The piece half cocks, cocks and releases with a strong spring.
~ Dimensions ~
The overall length of the musket is 41 inches (123 cm with a barrel length of 32 inches (82 cm).
The bayonet is 45 cm long with a 35 cm blade.
~ Condition ~
The central screw of the barrel’s tang is missing.
The overall condition of the piece is good for its age and it seems that it has been recently varnished.
