~ 3 Clasp Boer War Queens South Africa Medal Pte. T. Ryder 5th Lancers ~
This is a Boer War Queens South Africa medal to the 5th Lancers. The medal has three clasps.
The Queen’s South Africa Medal (QSA) was awarded to military personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902.
The dates “1899 1900” are clearly visible and were embossed on the reverse of the medal but removed soon after. These are referred to as ‘ghost dates’ and the reason they exist is that the duration of the war was grossly underestimated. This lead to some units being awarded medals with the embossed years, others received their medals with the years filed off and the majority were given an updated version without any dates.
The clasps are as followed:
– BELFAST – 26 August 1900 and 27 August 1900
– ORANGE FREE STATE – 28 February 1900 and 31 May 1902
– NATAL – 11 October 1899 and 11 June 1900
The medal is named & was awarded to “3948 Pte. T. RYDER 5/Lcrs”.
~ Condition ~
The medal has the expected tarnishing but is otherwise in good condition. There is no significant knocking and the frayed ribbon is original.
