These pieces are commonly used in surveying and construction to measure vertical heights or distances. The large numbers and alternating colors (often red and black) on the rod make it easy to read from a distance.
It collapses into three sections for easier transportation and storage, as indicated by the stacked sections at the top. The markings appear to indicate feet and inches, which would be typical for a staff used in British or American measurement systems. On the reverse a steel cartoush reads ‘J. Casartelli & Son, Opticians and Scientific Instrument Makers, 43, Market Street, Manchester’.
