*British, 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Troopers Sword and Scabbard, By J. Bourne and Son, with Regimental Markings, likely made for Indian Cavalry*

The one-piece wooden grip has checkered panels. It comes in a leather scabbard with a steel throat and chape, and includes the original leather sword knot.
This sword was supplied by Joseph Bourne & Son, a Birmingham-based gun maker in business from 1867 to 1908. They were major suppliers of swords produced by Robert Mole & Sons, also in Birmingham, and were significant suppliers to the Anglo-Indian cavalry in the 1880s, providing swords of the 1796 pattern type. The 1796 pattern with ‘stirrup’ hilts remained popular in India into the early 20th century, particularly among Indian Officers and Sowars of the Governor-General’s Body Guard Bengal.
The Pattern 1796 light cavalry sabre was primarily used by British light dragoons, hussars, and the King’s German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. It was also adopted by the Prussians (as the 1811 pattern or “Blücher sabre”) and used by Portuguese, Spanish, and Indian cavalry into the early 20th century. The sabre’s pronounced curve facilitated slashing attacks in cavalry actions. Its blade widened near the point, enhancing its effectiveness in slashes, though at the cost of balance. This design made it easier to use than the heavier Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword and allowed it to be wielded by all cavalrymen, not just the largest and strongest.
