Description

*British, 18th Century, Solid Brass Naval Model Cannon on Wooden Truck Carriage with Brass Fittings*

A substantial and well-executed 18th-century naval model cannon, constructed with a heavy solid brass barrel mounted on a traditional wooden truck carriage with brass fittings and four brass-bound wheels. The barrel measures approximately 31 cm in length, with a muzzle diameter of around 4 cm, and the complete piece weighs approximately 3.4 kg (7.5 lb), giving it a notably solid and authoritative presence that sets it apart from later lightweight decorative examples.

Importantly, this is not a fixed or purely ornamental casting but a true miniature working model, constructed along authentic lines. The barrel is fitted with integral trunnions and can be removed from the carriage, allowing the cannon to be disassembled in the same manner as a full-size naval gun. The wooden carriage is well proportioned, measuring approximately 13.5 cm wide including the wheels, and features stepped cheeks, brass axle caps, reinforcing straps, and ring bolts. A feeding / worming brush and tool are present, further reinforcing the instructional or demonstrative character of the model.

Historical Note:
Throughout the 18th century, the Royal Navy relied heavily on shipboard artillery, with cannon mounted on wooden truck carriages forming the backbone of naval firepower. Alongside service guns, smaller-scale cannon models were produced for dockyard reference, officer instruction, presentation, and later as high-quality commemorative or display pieces reflecting Britain’s naval dominance.

Models of this type were often made to closely mirror full-size ordnance in construction and handling, including removable barrels, correct trunnion mounting, and accurate carriage forms. The proportions, materials, and working features of this example align closely with late 18th-century naval practice, making it both a visually impressive display piece and a convincing representation of period artillery in miniature.

*Condition*
The cannon is in very good overall condition. The brass barrel displays an attractive aged patina with light surface marks, small blemishes, and minor handling wear consistent with age and display. The wooden carriage is sound and stable, showing honest wear, minor knocks, and surface scratches, with no significant damage or repairs noted. The brass fittings and wheels are complete and secure. The model remains fully disassemblable, with the barrel correctly lifting from the carriage, reinforcing its nature as a miniature rather than a fixed decorative piece. The feeding / worming brush is present but broken and secured with tape; this accessory is frequently missing entirely on comparable naval model cannons, and its survival here, albeit in imperfect condition, is still noteworthy. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
