*British, 1901-1953, Pair of Merchant Navy Second Officer’s Shoulder Boards, Two Stripe, Firmin London Buttons*
A smart and original matched pair of British Merchant Navy officer’s shoulder boards, representing the rank of former Second Officer / Second Mate. Constructed in dark navy wool with black leatherette backing, each board carries two broad gold rank stripes separated by a black band, the standard insignia for a Second Officer responsible for navigation and bridge watchkeeping aboard merchant vessels.
Both boards retain their original gilt fouled anchor buttons with King’s Crown above, marked Firmin London to the reverse, a highly respected British maker of naval and maritime uniform fittings. The use of the Tudor (King’s) Crown places these as pre-1953 manufacture, making them an attractive early-to-mid 20th century example. The straight stripe pattern, without Royal Navy executive curl, supports Merchant Navy rather than Royal Navy issue.
A very desirable and well-presented pair, ideal for collectors of Merchant Navy uniforms, maritime memorabilia, or British naval insignia.
History Note:
In Merchant Navy usage, two gold stripes traditionally denote a Second Officer (Second Mate), responsible for navigation, charts, bridge watchkeeping, and often safety equipment. In Royal Navy and related maritime uniforms, similar boards were used for formal undress and service dress depending on branch and period. The straight stripes without the Royal Navy executive curl lean more toward Merchant Navy usage, though the fouled anchor button maintains strong naval styling.
Matched original pairs with named maker buttons remain highly collectible, particularly when retaining good gilt finish and period construction.
