*British, Boer War & WW1, Medal Group for Hugh Robertson, (3549 6th Dragoon Guards: Queens South Africa Medal & Kings South Africa Medal), (DM2-196036 A.S.C. Army Service Corps: Great War Medal & Victory Medal), with Original Documents*
An evocative grouping that tells the story of a Scottish lad Hugh Robertson from Glasgow who served in the Anglo Boer War and WW1. He was born in 1876 and joined the 6th Dragoon Guards on 13th November 1896 aged 18. He served in the Anglo Boer war 1901-02 earning four clasps. In March 1904, whilst still serving, he achieved his Certificate of Education. On the 14th Nov 1904 he transferred to the Army Reserve at Gosport. On the 22nd Feb 1908, still part of the reserve and working as a Mercantile Clerk he married Williamina Margaret Purdie. On 12th Nov 1908 he was discharged. He had served a total of 12 years, with 4 years 189 days abroad and 3 years 360 days in the reserve. Then on 27th July 1916, aged 39, he enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps as a Driver Mechanical Learners. He was transferred to the Army Reserve February 1919. He died in 1926.

Kings South Africa Medal

This was the second campaign medal for the Boer War awarded to those who were in the theatre on or after Jan 1st 1902 and had completed 18 months service in the conflict prior to 1st June 1902.
WW1 Great War Medal
Marked: “DM2-196036, CPL. H. Robertson, A.S.C.” (Army Service Corps)
The British War Medal, awarded to those who served in World War I between August 5 1914, and November 11 1918, featured King George V on the obverse and St. George defeating Prussianism on the reverse. About 6.39 million Silver versions and 110,000 Bronze versions were awarded.
Michael Young, in his book “Army Service Corps 1902-1918” noted DM2 as Driver Mechanical Learners, a prefix that was discontinued after November 1916.
WW1 The Victory Medal
Marked: “DM2-196036, CPL. H. Robertson, A.S.C.” (Army Service Corps)
The Victory Medal, featuring Victory on the front and the inscription ‘The Great War for Civilization 1914-1919’ on the back, was awarded to those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and most recipients of the British War Medal. Service eligibility involved entering any theater of war between August 5, 1914, and November 11, 1918, with approximately 5.7 million medals issued.
