Description

*British, c.1870–1890 (Anglo-Boer War), Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers Snuff Box, Named “W. HOWE”*

A scarce and characterful brass snuff box personalised to a member of the Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers, most closely associated with the 1st Warwickshire Rifle Volunteer Corps raised in 1859. The lid is fitted with a cast Volunteer badge showing the county emblem of oak leaves and acorns within a circular strap inscribed “WARWICKSHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS”, set against a radiating background. Traces of original darkened finish remain.

The hand-formed brass body has an octagonal profile and shows clear evidence of long service and handling. The interior is stamped “W. HOWE”, almost certainly the original owner — a rifleman serving in the Warwickshire Volunteers during the late Victorian era. This personalised piece likely reflects regimental pride rather than official issue.

Measurements: approx. 6 cm x 4.8 cm x 1 cm

Historical Note:
The Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers emerged during the Volunteer Force movement of the late 1850s, when rising international tensions prompted Britain to create home-defence units composed of part-time citizen soldiers. By the 1880s the Warwickshire Volunteers had become closely associated with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Many members later volunteered for overseas deployment, including the Second Boer War (1899–1902). In 1908, the Volunteers were absorbed into the newly created Territorial Force, forming the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

Volunteer-era personal effects such as this box are uncommon survivors, offering a tangible link to Britain’s Victorian citizen-soldier tradition.

*Condition*
Age-related denting, wear and surface marks throughout. Historic solder to badge edge and small edge flaws from long use. Hinge intact and operating. Good, honest patination overall. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
