Description

*British, c.1902–1952, Royal Engineers Silver-Topped Swagger Stick*

An original Royal Engineers swagger stick, measuring approximately 68.3cm in length. The top is mounted with a silvered or nickel-plated cap bearing the crowned Royal Engineers badge, featuring the flaming grenade within the garter inscribed Royal Engineers, and below the regimental motto Ubique (“Everywhere”). The shaft is made from cane, with a fitted metal ferrule to the base.

Historical Note:
Swagger sticks were a popular part of British Army officer and senior NCO dress from the late Victorian era through to the mid-20th century. Regimental examples such as this were privately purchased and carried as a symbol of authority and esprit de corps, most often on barracks duty, parade, or when in walking-out dress.

The Royal Engineers, known as “Sappers,” are one of the oldest corps of the British Army, with distinguished service across all campaigns. Their motto Ubique reflects their constant presence on battlefields worldwide. The presence of the Tudor Crown on the badge dates this stick to between 1902 and 1952, spanning both World Wars.

*Condition*
The silvered top shows age-related wear, with small dents and tarnishing consistent with service use. The regimental badge remains well defined and clearly legible. The cane shaft retains much of its original varnish, with some losses, scratches, and surface wear from age. The metal ferrule at the base is present and worn, showing oxidation. A genuine period example with good patina and character. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
