Description

*British, George V Period, Royal Navy Officer’s Dirk / Short Sword by Gieves Ltd, Portsmouth & London*

An original British Royal Navy officer’s dirk or short sword dating to the early 20th century and likely to the reign of King George V (1910–1936), retailed by the prestigious naval outfitters Gieves Ltd of Portsmouth and London. The piece retains an attractive traditional naval hilt with gilt brass mounts, white shagreen grip and lion-head pommel together with remnants of its original etched blade decoration.

The dirk measures approximately 59.5 cm overall with a straight 44 cm steel blade of flattened diamond section tapering to a spear point. The gilt brass crossguard is of elegant S-curved form terminating in acorn finials and incorporating pierced langets. The obverse langet bears the crowned fouled anchor badge of the Royal Navy surrounded by a laurel wreath. The hilt retains its original white shagreen grip with multiple strands of gilt wire binding and is surmounted by a finely cast lion’s head pommel holding a suspension ring.

Traces of the original etched blade decoration remain visible to both sides, including foliate ornament, a crowned fouled anchor and a faint crowned royal cypher appearing to be GVR beneath a King’s Crown, suggesting manufacture during the reign of George V. The ricasso retains partially legible retailer details reading “BY APPOINTMENT / GIEVES LTD / PORTSMOUTH / LONDON / DOVER.”

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 44 cm. Overall length: 59.5 cm.

History Note:
Royal Navy dirks formed an important element of British naval officer dress during the late Victorian, Edwardian and interwar periods. Such weapons were privately purchased from distinguished naval outfitters including Gieves, whose premises at Portsmouth supplied generations of Royal Navy officers attached to Britain’s principal naval dockyards. The crowned fouled anchor remains one of the oldest and most recognisable symbols of Royal Naval service and authority.

*Condition*
The dirk displays substantial age and service wear throughout. The blade shows heavy surface oxidation, pitting and loss of polish with much of the etched decoration now faint though still partially discernible under angled light. The hilt retains good definition with surviving gilt finish and attractive aged patina. The shagreen grip and wire binding remain substantially intact. General wear, tarnishing and age-related marks throughout. No scabbard present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
