HMS Trump (P333) was a third-group T-class submarine, built by Vickers-Armstrongs and launched on 25 March 1944. The only Royal Navy vessel to bear the name, she primarily served with the 4th Submarine Squadron in Australia. Kept in service post-war, she was upgraded for improved underwater performance and remained the last RN submarine stationed in Australia, departing in January 1969. She was scrapped in August 1971.
As a third-group T-class submarine, Trump had an all-welded hull, allowing a deeper dive of 350 feet (107 m). She retained the torpedo armament of earlier versions but omitted external tubes due to streamlining issues. Designed for tropical climates, she was equipped with freon blowers.
World War II
Commissioned in July 1944, Trump conducted trials in the North Sea before deploying to Perth, Australia, with the 4th Submarine Squadron. She completed four patrols, sinking multiple Japanese vessels, including guard boat No. 15 Shosei Maru, a tanker, and coasters. She also attacked a convoy with HMS Tiptoe in August 1945.
Post-War Service
Following the war, Trump underwent the “Super T” conversion, enhancing underwater speed and endurance. Modifications included removing the deck gun, streamlining the conning tower, adding extra batteries, and improving diesel engines.
In 1960, she joined the 4th Submarine Flotilla in Sydney, participating in exercises with the Royal Australian and New Zealand navies. She underwent refits in 1962–63 and 1965–66 at Cockatoo Dockyard. Departing Australia in January 1969, she was briefly assigned to the Royal Australian Navy before being decommissioned and scrapped in Newport from August 1971.
