Description

*British, WW1, George V Territorial Force Efficiency Medal - 480004 Sapper John William Smith, Royal Engineers, with Original Ribbon*

WW1, George V Territorial Force Efficiency Medal - Engraved: "480004 SPR J. W. Smith. R.E"

The Territorial Force Efficiency Medal was a long-service award for non-commissioned officers and men in the United Kingdom's Territorial Force from 1908 to 1921. It required a minimum of 12 years of service, including attendance at 12 annual training camps. Previous service in other part-time forces, such as the Volunteer Force, was eligible, and wartime service counted double.

In 1911, the medal's obverse was updated to feature King George V, with the inscription "GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:". The reverse had a raised rim and bore the inscription "TERRITORIAL FORCE EFFICIENCY MEDAL" in four lines. Initially, the ribbon was dark green with a central yellow stripe, but in December 1919, it was changed to dark green with yellow edges.

Forces War records confirm that John William Smith a Sapper of the Royal Engineers was awarded the Victory Medal, War Medal, and Territorial Force Efficiency Medal. He was born in 1877, discharged from service 23 Feb 1919. His pension records show that he moved from London to Leeds in 1921.
