The Zuckerman helmet, officially known as the Civilian Protective Helmet, was designed for civil defense and public use in Britain during World War II. Developed in mid-1940 by Solly Zuckerman, Derman Christopherson, and Hugh Cairns, it was introduced in December 1940, with the majority made in 1941.
Made from pressed mild or impact-resistant manganese steel, the helmets came in two sizes (Medium and Large), this helmet, is marked “M” for medium on the brim, and a “J” on the opposite side suggests it was produced by JSS – Joseph Sankey Ltd, Bilston. It features two single holes on the brim, indicating its ballistic impact resistance (not suitable for frontline use). The high dome design was aimed to absorb impact and protect the wearer. It has 16 pre-drilled holes for attaching the liner.
Zuckerman helmets were issued to Civil Defense personnel, including Fire Guards and Street Fire Parties, as well as factory workers. They were also available for purchase by the general public for 5 shillings and sixpence (5s 6d).
