HMS Uproar (P31) was a Royal Navy U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness. Originally named P 31, she was renamed Ulleswater in February 1943 and finally Uproar in April 1943—the only RN vessel ever to bear that name. Early in her career, she participated in the Bismarck operation, though she did not directly engage the enemy.
Throughout World War II, Uproar operated mainly in the Mediterranean with the 10th Flotilla from Malta. After sustaining damage in an air raid, she resumed patrols, sinking several enemy ships including the Italian auxiliary patrol vessel D-15/Brindisi, the merchant Chietti (formerly French Artesien), and the passenger ship Andrea Sgarallino—with only four survivors out of 300 aboard—plus the Italian merchant Marin Sanudo. She was also targeted by depth charges from Italian torpedo boats and damaged other enemy vessels, such as the German tanker Matera and troop transport Virgilio, while torpedoing the tanker Champagne, which later ran aground off Corsica.
Uproar also made unsuccessful attacks against the Italian merchant Chisone, German submarine U-466, and Italian cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli, and took part in operations Harpoon and Vigorous in June 1942. She survived the war, was sold for scrap on 13 February 1946, and dismantled at Thos. W. Ward in Inverkeithing.
