*British, WW2, The Artic Star Medal, with Ribbon*
The Arctic Star is a medal awarded to members of the British Commonwealth who served on the Arctic Convoys during World War II. It was the direct result of constant lobbying by veterans and associated organisations, the Government finally agreed on December 19, 2012. to issue the Arctic Star retrospectively. The medal was intended to honor service in the Arctic convoys, which were primarily designed to transport ships and their escorts to North Russia. The Arctic Star was awarded for any operational service north of the Arctic Circle from September 3, 1939 to May 8, 1945.
As many as 120,000 veterans or their next-of-kin are believed to be eligible for the Arctic Star. As at 19 July 2018, the Ministry of Defence had issued 18,637 Arctic Star medals to eligible veterans on a self-nomination basis.
Campaign medals were instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943 – the first being the 1939–43 Star (later named the 1939–1945 Star) and the Africa Star. By May 1945, a total of eight campaign stars and nine clasps had been instituted by the United Kingdom to acknowledge wartime service. A maximum of six campaign stars could be awarded to any individual, with certain clasps signifying eligibility for additional stars. However, only one clasp could be worn on each campaign star.
